A new world

I didn't look at when I last posted as far as the date, but it doesn't matter.  I have missed blogging and have started catching up on my favorite blogs as well.

A new world has meaning for several things.  I have had surgery on my knee finally and it feels pretty darn good.  I am almost 4 weeks out and there's only a few things still to be overcome like bending my knee all the way, using it to go up stairs, etc.  That will come though.

I am finally getting back to knitting.  I have two sock pairs to work on, one using Blue Moon yarn won someplace and another pair using Regia.  I have changed to using size 2 needles to ease not only the hand of the socks but its easier and a bit faster to knit them.  I will take pics later.

I am posting today on my new computer.  Trying to get up on Windows 10 and also learning to get faster on this keyboard.  I prefer traditional laptops for the keyboard and portability.  I wanted to stream some of the new tv stuff that's on and couldn't with my 12 year old laptop.  It's time to retire that one.  It's been a great laptop and so I got another Dell.  I have been sorely disappointed with their customer service though.  sheesh.  I hate getting on the phone and that's all I have done in the past week.  It was an operator problem when I ordered it so I guess I paid for it.

I have been shocked to have my brother marry again.  Love his new wife and think it will be great to have a sister again.  I will finish the Civil War quilt now for them.  I have the instructions out to finish the last two sets of main blocks and then have 64 (yes 64) blocks for the border.  That should be accomplished in doing a couple per day for a month or so.  It will be machine quilted by a good friend and then passed on to them to keep them warm this winter.

I have two sweaters to finish before either taking up another UFO or starting yet another one.  I have picked out two patterns for the little grand-nieces and nephew kids for Xmas so will get yarn and start on those too.  They are so much fun to knit for.  My sweaters are the kit from Iceland and a Drops sweater.  You can visit these on Ravelry.

We have a storm heading in here today.  My leaves are turning and I need to get out in the garden soon and dig my red and purple potatoes.  I also have a few Grannie Smith Apples and some Asian Pears.  I have found that letting them go through a first frost is best and I believe it as I did that last year.  Sweetens them all.  yum

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaccccccccccccckkkkkkkk

I like posting here rather than Facebook so much better.  It is beyond me sometimes to post there.

I see that I had just left my past job the last time I posted.  I had a long vacation after that and really didn't get much of anything done.  Then I worked at another job, this time part time.  I loved that job until my very much liked supervisor accepted a promotion in the company.  Then the worst happened.  New supervisor that wasn't a supervisor.  ack  After getting in trouble (are we 4 years old here?) for being allergic to her perfume (which she wasn't supposed to be wearing anyway).  My throat started closing, I was almost done with my work for the day, so got done and ran for it.  I did punch out and did everything that I was used to doing.  More stuff happened after that to not just me but others and I decided that I was still a grown up and not a 4 year old, so gathered my stuff and walked.  As it turned out, another person in another department walked out that very same day.  That was a common occurrence there.  We had also found out that she was the OPS manager's best friend.  What??!!??  We had no options.  Enough said.

I have been home again, trying to be retired this time to grow my business and begin my jewelry adventure.

I am trying to figure out how to get photos from my iphone to my email.   When I do, or don't.  I will take new pics from my Fuji and take care of that problem.  J

I am free

Hi all 5 of you out there.  :>)  The post title is a great one for me.  I am no longer working 50 hours a week.  You will never know how relieved I am to say that.  I have been off for a month now and it seems like a few days.  I have been catching up on sleep and resting as much as I can.

I am not fully retired, but am looking for either a part time job or full time (which now seems like part time after working so many hours for a year and a half).  That will help me do some reno work around the house.

I was able to order a great shed and the man and I got it all built and still like each other.  That's a real accomplishment.  ha!  Pictures soon.

I have been doing a little of the following:  reading, spinning, knitting, applique, gardening, organizing, etc.  Cool huh?  I am thrilled.  The first two weeks were so frustrating.  First off, I didn't know what to do with so much time.  I would get up early and do a few things and then crash.  I do still take naps when I want to or when I really can't keep my eyes open.  I am sleeping in until 8am or so every day now and staying up way until 10 or so.  It feels so decadent.

My front yard looks pretty darn good if I say so myself.  Last summer I was lucky to get the lawns mowed.  Now, I am finding actual plants in my garden beds and enjoying all that again.  I still haven't gotten my veg garden redone yet, but by fall it will be done and all ready for spring next year.  That is so exciting!

I will take lots of pictures and post.  It's so nice to be back here.

pictures! wahoo

 This is a new sweater started.  Similar color to the Tapestry sweater.  I doubt if I have even talked about these projects on this blog, but have blabbed about them on Ravelry.  This is another rust colored sweater a bit deeper in color than the Tapestry sweater.  This is a Drops pattern 134-55.  Sometimes they name their patterns but not this one.  This is an interesting pattern to knit.  This is the top back piece.  Then the next part is to knit each side that starts middle back and goes around the back piece and to the front and up the front. It will be fun.  The next part is the second back/side/front and then the sleeves.  This is bigger yarn and is faster to knit.  Oh, yeah, Birdie managed to stick her foot into the picture and I didn't even know she was doing that.  See how she points to the fabulous knitting.

Here is the Tapestry sweater.  It's really slow going but a beautiful pattern.  I am almost to the waist.  It's a longer sweater.

That's it for knitting for now.  Now for quilting projects.  We (my applique group that I have been a member of for over 10 years) are working on "Welcome to the North Pole" another Piece'o'Cake pattern from way back when I joined the group.  Then we moved on to other projects and most of us never finished this one.  It's way cute and we are doing it 25% bigger than in the book.  I will embellish the quilt after it's quilted.  There will be all kinds of stuff on this quilt, sequins, beads, braid, buttons, and maybe glitter and fancy paints.

I have gotten some glitter onto this block already and had most of it done years ago.

This block is the next block that I finished.  Way back then, when I had only ever done a small amount of applique, this project scared me to death.  Lots of tiny, tiny pieces to be sewn.  I don't use fusible webbing very often and try not to.  So, I am learning and growing!

Is this not cute?  I don't have the little signs on the different buildings yet, but this one is the Royal Toy Works, the Candy Cane Factory and the Hats & Mittens Shoppe.

The Reindeer Barn.  Talk about tiny pieces.  omg  There is a little N on one of the front feet of the Reindeer on the weather vane.  Finished size of that N is about 3/8" x 3/8"

This is the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claus.  While reorganizing my fabric stash and UFO's I found a whole box of Christmas fabric.  I love this plaid with the gold threads running through it.  I love the pattern and it's wonky windows.  So fun.

This is the Japanese/denim quilt that I finally was able to finish (thanks to friend Malinda the machine quilter).  This was a wedding present for my Nephew and his new Wife.  So, they have been married for 4 or 5 years now, but better late than never.  The Japanese fabrics are really beautiful.  Stamp printed with Indigo in wonderful organic prints.  I couldn't resist naming the quilt "I'm Turning Japanese".  Heh, heh.  It's a big quilt and is meant to be that quilt that's used constantly for years and years and years.

I am thinking now of other stuff to show and tell.  But, will take more pictures and so you need to check back later.  :>)

What?

Seems like I have titled more than one post with that title.  I have taken pictures.  Yesiree.  But, they are at home in the camera.  I will get my act together one of these days.

I have been out in the garden moving railroad ties.  And despite them being riddled with ant colonies, they are HEAVY.  I have learned not to use railroad ties for gardens.  The creosote even when very old, will stop anything from growing.  I am redoing my vegetable beds back to flat garden that I can make natural raised beds by shovel and rake.  This makes them movable and I can compost grass clippings, newspapers, etc. on the walkways.  Easier for me, good for the garden.

I ordered seeds from Park.  They have a big sale on right now Website  I used to order from Burpee's a long time ago, but they are EXPENSIVE.  sheesh.  Last year I joined a CSA but they have now overpriced what I got last year.  How much Swiss Chard, Patty Pan squash and Eggplants can one possibly eat?  Me?  Not very many.  The fresh greens were excellent though.

I attended the Helper Spring Retreat this year.  It was so very nice to have Michelle and Al take care of us.  Amazing food as always.  I spun all weekend (3 plus days).  I am almost done with the purple thrums.  yay  Something yummy will follow.  I have lots to choose from. 

Still working 10 hours of overtime a week.  Things are stressful as the project is behind and over budget.  And the project is in process of being turned over to the client.  Did I say stressful?  yah.  I don't know how long I will be here.  Am hoping for not long.  Ready to move along.

Update on the kitty.  Her toe surgery was an adventure.  She was not amused.  But, she is running around like a kitten again.  The toe had to be cut open to remove the rogue toenail.  She endured a "cast" of white tape and then a very modern sticky colored tape of emerald green.  She could walk on it soon after surgery so I am hoping it was healing pain and not pre-surgery pain.  The vet did an amazing job.

Labor Day Holiday Weekend

So happy to have taken a couple of extra days off to total 5 days.  yaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy  It's been so nice to just relax and knit.  I have been doing a few other things and will do some garden stuff tomorrow morning at least and organize some stuff in the garage.

Great Basin Fiber Arts Fair is over for this year.  It was truly wonderful to be inside the Arena at Salt Lake County Equestrian Park this year.  The best part?  No canopies to set up.

The only thing I did to make them bloom really was to water them with warm water a couple of times.  Magic.

I have been doing a bit of applique.  I didn't finish the center medallions for the Red Aunt Millies Garden Quilt.  So, I have been cutting tons of little pieces and hand appliqueing them together to form the rounds.  I will post a pic of the quilt top again with all of them.  Blurry!  yikes.

That's it for today.  I think I will be working on the 2011 Civil War quilt tomorrow.  One more set of blocks, then sew the whole center together.  Then, a ton of border blocks.  That will be a project.  Just cutting the pieces will be a marathon, let alone sewing them all.  I think there are 64 blocks?  sheesh

OH!! I almost forgot, I was awarded the Best In Show rosette for my Gray Handspun Bluebird sweater.  I am so happy about that.  I have it entered in the State Fair, so I have my fingers crossed.  When it returns to the house I will take a pic of the finished project.  So proud.

I cannot believe it's been so long since I posted.  I tell ya right now, this job I have been working at is for the birds.  I need to have my life back!

I have some eye candy.

This is the Mystery shawl for 2012 from Stephen West on Ravelry.  This is the first clue.  I have reknit this piece almost a couple of times.  I get distracted by tv or by thinking about other stuff I guess.  The darker yarn is Ebony from Fleece Artist.  The background yarn is an Elann.com yarn Dankai Sock It To Me yarn.  It's a singles and I would never have knit socks from it but it's perfect for this project.

This is the other project that has my interest for now:

The pattern is the Fireside Sweater by Amber Allison.  This pattern is also from Ravelry.  Whenever I get bored at work, I look at patterns in the Ravelry library.  Someday I would so love to get some designs out of my head and publish them.  This is one of the fronts.  I have them done and am now on the back of the sweater.  This yarn is the New Zealand Woolpack that I bought from Paradise Fibers.  This yarn is kind of frustrating because there are neps in the singles every foot or so.  ack!!  

Quilting?  Yeah!

This is the 17th block of 20.  I will be sad when these blocks are done, but it's sure been fun.  Our applique group is going to be finishing a project that they were working on when I joined the group a long time ago.

Yup, another Piece'o'cake pattern.  This project is such a kick.  There is glitter, trims, braids, buttons, etc. added for effect.  You can see the glitter that I have added to one fabric.  Welcome To The North Pole

Stitch, stitch, stitch

There has been some knitting and stitching going on here in the evenings.  I have been working on the sleeves of the flax colored sweater a bit.  At night I am usually so tired and brain fried that I needed something simple, the sleeves are mostly stockinette stitch.  Easy peasy.

But, mostly I have been back at the Whimsical Garden blocks.  They are so much fun, how can I resist?

This block was kind of different.  I wanted the pink and turquoise flowers to pop and also wanted the basket to take a back seat.  I finally found this print.  Loved it and I think it works.

This fabric is so much fun by itself.  I had ordered the backgrounds from Piece'o'Cake and this was one of the best.  I had chosen a white with blue circles on it for the bird, but didn't like that when I got it sewn on, so changed to this.  The birds look better in a color with a print rather than the opposite.

Quite a few of these blocks have elements that sneak over into the borders that will be added.  It will be fun to do these borders.  They are more like picture frames with a 1/4 inch mock-piping next to the block.  I haven't decided which colors to use yet.  In the pattern, they suggested a gold/yellow next to the block and then different greens for the frames.  I don't know yet.  :>)

I did pick up some new fabrics for the other older version of the civil war series so might be back to that someday too.  So many fun things to work on and not much time.  When this job is over around the end of this year I will work part time if I decide to work very much at all.  Burned out?  yeah.  There is a Phase II to this project and don't know yet what's going  happen as far as people needed for that.  I guess I will find out.  Don't know if I will be interested or offered anything.  If I do work that, it will end the same year I can retire and not work anymore.  Something to think about.

I have also been spinning!  It's been awhile but am finally getting to the pile of fiber in the living room that has to be spun and not hidden away in the stash downstairs.  My imposed rule.  What I have been spinning is a pink/purple/orange alpaca that came from Altamist Alpacas.  I was thinking that I had too much of it, but as it turns out is easy to spin.  I have one bobbin done and am working on the second one.  All this using the Louet bobbins that hold 8 ounces.  :>)  Sometimes my eyes are bigger than my desire to spin?  stomach?  ha!

A bit blurry, but you get the idea.  Really pretty, it will be fun to ply it and then make some fingerless mitts to keep my hands warm at work.  The fiber:

The wind is really blasting today.  It's also very warm out there. Supposed to be in the 80's.  Ugh, too soon I say for that heat.  A good day to stay inside and just play.  I am headed to the sewing machine to work on some civil war blocks.  I still have 3 more months to get done and then the never ending border of blocks (68 of them, yeah, 68 12 inch blocks).

New pics!!

The quilting continues, just not so much.

Cute huh?  These are all fabrics that I ordered from Piece'o'Cake.  Love them.  They were moving their shop and put a bunch of stuff on sale.  So, I couldn't resist their grab bags.

I am still working a LOT so I really don't have the energy to post here, nor have much fun at all really.  I will post as often as I can though.  I started some new things.  I think it's the after-the-holidays-startitis.

This sweater in white and aubergine.  Baby silk.  Yes, it's that soft too.

Not only soft but fuzzy like angora too.  Just Alpaca and silk.

This is handspun that I have dyed at Kathy's Meadow over the years.  The browns were dyed with Cutch, black walnuts and madder, the pinks with brazilwood and cochineal and the greens were from various yellows dyed with goldenrod, rabbit brush and weld, then overdyed with indigo.  I love, love, love dyeing with yellows and then indigo, the greens are really spectacular and all so different and amazing.

These projects are added to all the others.  Some of them are easy to knit so that's for nights and weekends when I can't concentrate and other projects are for nights and weekends when I can take on more complicated stuff.

This job will last until the end of the year or so, maybe a bit longer, then I can breathe again.  I will sign up with Medicare this year and then hope to just work part-time jobs or at least regular 40 hours a week jobs until I retire.  I am truly tired of working for other people at this point and I will just spend time working at my own business selling dyed fibers and yarns and then the spinning wheel bags.  That might be enough for me.  :>)

Onward.  This is Sunday morning and I do have one thing that has to be done today, but otherwise, just sit tight at home and enjoy the day.  ta

It's crazy

It is crazy how fast the time goes whizzing right on by sometimes.  whew!

Holidays are over for 2011 and 2012 is here.  And people thought the end of the world was going to be 12 years ago?  doh

The job is still taking up most of my time and will until later this year.  This is a contract job even though they give full benefits and I won't know exactly how long I will be working this many hours (or maybe even more) until the job is finished.  I am sure I will get another job after this one.  And, for my sanity and energy level, I hope a 40 hours per week job.  Or maybe part time.  hmmm.   I will be on Medicare this year.  yay.  I won't have to worry so much about insurance anyway.  So part time might be perfect.

Remember this project?  It's all knitted and ready for seams and buttons.  This is closer to the real color as well, the above picture was so yellow and pink and I give up trying to figure out cameras for color anyway.

I hope to do that soon.  Seems attainable, but I really can't tell when I will grab the pile of blocked pieces and do it.  Maybe this week?

In the mean time, a new project happened.  I have had this bag of yarn and the pattern ready for way too long.  It's fun to knit so now that I am started, it will finally get done.  The sweater is for me.  I also am still working on the sweater shawl sweater and quilting.

This is a new block of the month that I am working on.  It's called Kansas City Star and will be totally pieced.  The fabrics are similar each month, this one is called Posie.  Don't you also love my ironing board cover?

I also am working on the 2011/12 Civil War Revival quilt top and we are almost done with that one.  I will get some pics of that soon.

I put together my one of the quilting swap projects that I did a very long time ago.  Chickens.  It's wonderful and will take a picture of it very soon.

Today, I am preparing the header cloths for my Grace Quilting Frame.  I gave myself an upgrade to the metal carriage for Christmas, so now it's a go for the whole thing.  Pictures will happen as soon as I get the first quilt ready to work on.  yippee

An engineer that I was chatting with at work asked me what I was possibly going to do when I retire.  hahahahahahahahahahahahaaha

It's Almost Here!

My 4 days off.  Oh, yay!!

I will be fixing the man and I's Thanksgiving dinner this year.  The turkey is thawing and I only have to go to the store right after work.  I am sure that won't be much fun, but I need orange juice for the cranberry bread.

I got my birthday present from myself today.  A Kindle Fire.  It's really cool.  It's everything but a phone to me.  I don't use my cell phone very much, so this will be fun.  I already have a ton of books from Audible, music from iTunes and will have to see how the video thingy works too.  I can access my email via WiFi along with the web really, so it will be great to carry around for entertainment during the day instead of hitting the internet a little during the day at work when we really aren't really supposed to be using it a lot.  I can't check my email from there and some other sites as well.

No pics today, but I promise later this weekend.  :>)  The gray handspun sweater grows every day.

Ok then

I can't believe I am starting my 4th week at work.  Time flies during the week.  Somehow though, my weekend days seem longer.  On those weekday evenings, I get home, eat, watch a bit of tv and then off to bed.  Up at 6am, to work by 7 and then drive home in the dark at 5:30.  sheesh  The cat velcros herself to me more.  She was way used to having me home all the time.  She doesn't know what to get me to do first when I am home.  I will have 4 days off for Thanksgiving.  That will seem like a huge vacation!

I have been knitting a bit though, now that the shock of working is over.  I finished the first front of the long gray sweater and have a few more inches on the flax colored sweater.  And,  I am also just finishing up another bird block for the Whimsical Garden quilt.  I will post a pic of that for sure when I get it done.

We have definate fall here.  The tree in the front yard dropped most of it's leaves yesterday.  But, it's raining and snowing today, so raking is out.  <sigh>

The Calm Before the Storm

The man and I travelled to Bryce Canyon for a few days.  We did actually drive through the park and took a short hike to see the Bristle cone pines.

It's easy to see for 40 miles to the Paria Plateau.  Every picture I took is beautiful, there's more:

Coming to the end of the trail.  Live bristle cone pines.  Some weren't so lucky to make it for more than a few hundred years:

The one above had rings that were almost touching.  Probably a couple hundred of them.  This stump is about 2 feet across and had grown around a branch.

This is a natural bridge about halfway to the point which is around 20 miles from Ruby's Inn where we stayed.

That new project has been progressing nicely.  Fatter yarn makes for faster projects.  This sweater is very long, but it's still fun to knit.  I have the back done and am 2/3 of the way up the right front.  Sorry for the blurry picture.  I need to find a way to take pictures of it with more contrast.  Maybe take it from a lower angle and to the side so the flash will make shadows?  The bottom of the sweater is to the left.  The pretty Celtic pattern is at the waist.

Alas, I won't have so much time to knit from now on.  I am back to a real job tomorrow.  10 hour days, 5 days a week.  Yup, 50 hours a week, includes 10 hours of overtime at time and a half.   I have a feeling that this will kill me for awhile but hopefully will make me stronger in the long run.  :>)  It's doing my favorite thing, document control and a big enough company that I am getting paid very well indeed.  woohoo!!

Ut oh, another new project

This is the last fleece that I spent time spinning.  It's Romney-Corriedale from Knowltons Farm.  It's soft and warm and this sweater pattern will keep my butt warm this winter.  I love sweaters that do that.

It's knitting up fast and the pattern is very easy to understand.  I did add more rows of garter stitch on the beginning edge to help it hang better than shown in the picture on the pattern.

The sweater shawl continues finally.  I have to be very careful when I crochet.  I did so much around 20 years ago that I started having carpel tunnel problems and tendonitis in my thumb.  Having a death grip on the hook really aggravates this problem so have to think about holding the hook like a little bird.  Nice and loose and relax!

You can see the first sleeve taking shape at the top of the picture.  I haven't sewn beads on the crochet yet.

Our weather is changing today.  Snow forecast for the mountains above 7000 ft.  Rain down here.  We received a wonderful downpour yesterday for about 10 minutes.  Love that.  The sun will be back this weekend so can get one lawn mowed and start cleaning up my perennials around the yard.  Yarrow will be cut and moved and especially cut back the Jupiter's Beard.  These plants got really tall this year with all the rain and are now blocking all of the walkways.  It's very annoying.

I will stay busy today inside and most of tomorrow, gloom outside gets me down sometimes so working on colorful stuff in here will help with that.  :>)

Too much to do and not enough play time

No pics today.  I know, I know, bummer.  I have been bored silly and finally made a list of things that I really need to get done and that fixed that boredom.

I have been production sewing my spinning wheel bags to get orders finished.  This week I am working on the last 4 orders that I have.  I will finish one today, whew!

The soft orangey/purpley sweater that I have been working on is sitting here staring at me.  I ran out of yarn and this is the beauty of spinning my own yarns.  I am spinning more.  Gotta love that.  I knew on some level that if I made the longer tunic length, I might run out of yarn.  I did.  Thanks, little voice.  I do love spinning the Blue Face Leister and did have some left over after Great Basin.  I might spin more than I need to.  :>)

I received the new set of Drops patterns the other day and one or two in the same issue grabbed me and fast.  They don't name their patterns so here are the numbers, 134-1 and 134-55.  Oh!  Maybe I can find pics on the web to post here.  Hang on....

Ok:

Is that not a wonderful pattern?  This is 134-1.  I have a bunch of gray handspun that will work very well for this sweater, in fact, I have it all set up in a bag already.

And, I just happen to have some brown handspun that will be perfect for this pattern.  hmmmm.  It's that not enough time thing slapping me in the face again.  Just gotta knit faster.

Two not just one!

Fun huh?  I do say that a lot too.  The next one won't be so fast to do.  Another blue bird, yay!!

So, that's pretty much all I have been doing.  I did finish the front of the San Fran shirttail though.  Now I am on to the sleeves.  I will do those first before I put the whole thing together.  I am going to love wearing this one just like I love wearing the other one that I made.

The next spinning project that I have lined up is to spin some custom thrums that I had carded a bunch of years ago.  After that, a brown Knowltons fleece.  mmmmmmmmmmmm

Tomorrow the man and I are off to the Gem Faire.  Neither one of us have anything in mind.  ha!  He gets sucked in to the chunks of fabulous stone and who knows what will grab me.  There is this guy who sells bronze chains and findings and charms oh my.

Software is strange sometimes

I changed over to Internet Explorer and got my pics to load today.  I don't know why Safari wouldn't cooperate yesterday.  I have never had to change browsers to get this to work.  Smoke and mirrors.

The San Francisco Shirttail is growing.  I have the front almost done now.  The next step is to join the back to the front at the shoulders and then finish the neckline.  Then, on to the sleeves.  I have more of Jill Vosberg's patterns and will probably work on another one soon.  The gods know how much yarn I have in my house. 

This is what I am spinning at present.  Gorgeous, no?  I have enough for socks or maybe a small shoulder warmer, or fingerless mitts, or ??

I have gotten back to my stitching.  These are the first two blocks of twenty for "My Whimsical Quilt Garden".  I love this project.  I just finished the third one, but will show that tomorrow.  So cute.  It's a blast to throw crazy, bright fabrics together.  Piece O Cake is having a sale on their fabrics so I couldn't resist a few of their scrap bags.  Can't wait to see what I get.  I have been out searching for more dots and turquoise for the birds and was successful, so I have a great stack to choose from for the rest of the project.

This should probably be on LOL Cats.  She was laying down and was looking up at me and the camera didn't function like it was supposed to.  She finally got tired of me telling her to "look" and got up to give me this WTF look.  She has been sneezing for 3 days and congested.  I don't know what was in that last storm, but the both of us have been all allergied up this week.  Sick of it.

Show and tell is over for today.  Well, almost anyway, WWH meeting tonight with a huge show and tell, so will drag some stuff there for a change.  :>)
